Tenzin es un niño de 11 años con una minusvalia física que le impide moverse fácilmente y que no le permite hablar. Cuando el terremoto golpeó Nepal él estaba en la pequeña casa de té que regenta su familia muy cerca de Langtang. La avalancha cayó encima de ellos y sus padres, sus tres hermanos y dos primos pequeños murieron allí mismo. Tenzin quedó atrapado entre maderas, el hielo y las rocas…, pero estaba vivo. Desde donde estaba podía ver a su madre tumbada a sus pies, pero él no podía moverse para ayudarla. Al día siguiente pasó un chico que bajaba de Kenjin Gumpa y al verlo allí le dijo que no se moviera y que volveria con ayuda en cuanto fuera posible. Le dejó también una botella de Chang para que pudiera beber durante el tiempo en que la ayuda llegara. Durante 2 días más no paraban de caer piedras y era muy peligroso estar en la zona de Langtang. Habian visto morir a mucha gente y nadie se atrevia a salir de los refugios. El tercer día la avalancha de piedras se calmó y algunos hombres decidieron subir a Langtang a buscar a sus seres queridos. Dawa Tamang, el chico que se había cruzado con Tenzin 2 días antes subió con el grupo. Él albergaba la esperanza de encontrar al niño vivo. Por suerte así era, el chico había sobrevivido durante 3 días entre los escombros. Lo sacaron de allí y posteriormente un helicóptero lo llevó hasta Kathmandú y a Yellow Gumpa donde estaban el resto de refugiados tibetanos de Langtang. Al campamento lo vino a buscar su sponsor extranjero que lo llevó a una escuela especial donde estará bien cuidado… Muchos niños no tienen la suerte de tener un sponsor que quiera cuidar de ellos cuando ocurre algo así.
Tenzin nos explicó más tarde en el campamento de refugiados, que el primer dia lo pasó mal, que tenia mucha sed y le dolía la espalda donde le golpeó una roca, pero que el segundo día, después de beber el Chang que le dió Dawa pudo dormir toda la noche muy a gusto sin sentir ningún dolor. He de explicar que el Chang es una bebida alcohólica similar a la cerveza que hacen allí con maíz…

We met Tenzing and his mother Dawa while trekking five years ago, on the way from Chyamki to Gumba. My wife and I were deeply moved by the meeting and we made company uphill. I helped Tenzing´s walk. Coming up we were invited inside for a cup of tea. We met some of their relatives and talked. We agreed that we should try to meet again. Before leaving I knelt before this boy, something I have never done before anyone else. When we came out of the house there was a full rainbow over the upper valley. We didn´t know then but have learnt later that a rainbow is an auspicious phenomenon. With time it has become important for us as well.
We felt a desire to help this boy and his family and with the help of a friend i Kathmandu we managed to send a messenger to ask the family if they wanted our support.
Two years later he moved to a special school, DRC Nepal in Gokarna. He has been living there for two whole years. I suppose it was some relatives and other Langtangpas that took him back to the DRC family. An example of the cooperative and caring spirit of the Langtang community.
He is the sweetest boy, so helpful and considerate. In the school they sat that every time they need someone of the children to do some task, he is the first to report that he is willing. He has been making great progress in these two years, learnt to read, his speech has improved and regular physiotherapy has improved his mobility. It is so incredibly sad that he lost his whole family, such loving people. But Tenzing is meant to live, and he is a very brave soul.
I wish i could be with him this time, so difficult for so many. My comfort is that I know he is well cared for at the DRC.
