Hello friends. Lots of people have asked us if they can go to Langtang to help.
We are pleased to say that there are options for anybody who would like to go to go to Langtang and directly help with the reconstruction and clean-up operation.
The Langtang Committee (details below) are in the best position to offer any guidance and also have the help of a foreign volunteer to help the planning and coordination of new volunteers. There is also a wealth of information on the website below:

The position as volunteer in Langtang is especially suitable for those who, apart from helping, like the mountains and want to learn and live the traditional daily life of a village in the Himalayas. In almost all cases it will end up being a unique experience of living with the locals that will create links that will last much longer than the volunteer experience itself.
Saying all of this; we do not want to give anybody any deceptions. Reconstruction has only just begun in earnest and the area that was ravaged by the earthquake is still a very difficult place to survive. Even the local people still do not have a clear workflow and all of the required infrastructure to supply food and accommodation. What I am trying to say is that life in the valley is still very hard and volunteers who decide to come should be people with some experience in the mountains and be prepared not to have the amenities that one might expect in their normal lives, it will be a very different experience compared to volunteers in an orphanage in Kathmandu for example…

La gente de Langtang se ha construido pequeñas cabañas de pastor donde pueden resguardarse mientras limpian sus tierras de escombros para poder plantar, o empiezan a construir sus nuevas casas. Otros siguen viviendo en tiendas de campaña que subieron desde Yellow Gumpa. Estos refugios son temporales, pero para muchos serán sus casas durante los próximos años y serán el único cobijo que pueden ofrecer a los voluntarios que quieran venir a compartir sus tareas del día a día. No hay camas, no hay sillas, ni lavabos o duchas…No hay intimidad ninguna y muchas veces todo está lleno de humo. Se duerme en el suelo al lado de la cocina y cada día se come lo mismo, normalmente arroz con lentejas. Cada uno se lava su ropa a mano. La vida aquí se hace difícil si no estás acostumbrado… Explico todo esto porque hay que estar bien mentalizado para poder ayudar a esta gente, sinó puede ocurrir que acabes siendo una problema para ellos en vez de una ayuda.
Eso si, en caso de dificultades siempre puedes acercarte a uno de los Guest Houses y pagarte una buena comida, una ducha o una habitación cómoda durante varios días para reponerte y así ayudas también a la economía local. Cualquier gasto que hagas en la zona es en beneficio de sus gentes.
Aunque pueden encontrar trabajos para cualquier persona, sería importante que entre los voluntarios que vengan haya algunos trabajadores de la construcción, carpinteros o especialistas que puedan aportar su experiencia, y si tienen herramientas propias que puedan traer, mucho mejor.
Para muchos voluntarios occidentales que queremos ayudar nos choca el “nepali life style”. Ellos llevan un ritmo tranquilo que a nosotros nos puede estresar bastante. Nosotros queremos hacer muchas cosas, tenemos ansia por avanzar y ir terminando proyectos…Esta manera de hacer del mundo occidental debe quedar a un lado, porque en Langtang (en Nepal en general) todo necesita su tiempo y no sirve de nada enfadarse o intentar subir el ritmo, porque realmente es una carrera de fondo y no de velocidad. Si intentas hacer un sprint te vas a agotar, y no vas a conseguir llegar a la meta.
Sea como sea, si vienen con intención sincera de ayudar todo el mundo será bienvenido en Langtang. Hasta pronto, un abrazo!
